Glacier is the last real town before the Mt. Baker Highway climbs into the mountains, a scattering of cabins, a general store, and old growth forest along the Nooksack River. It is not a big place, and that is exactly the draw for the kind of trip that wants quiet mornings and a short drive to the mountain.

What Glacier is like
Glacier runs on the mountain’s schedule. Winter brings a steady flow of skiers and riders headed up SR 542 to Mt. Baker Ski Area, one of the snowiest resorts in North America, and the town’s small businesses, the general store, a bakery, a couple of restaurants, stay busy through the season. Summer is slower and greener, with hikers using Glacier as a jumping-off point for trails along the Nooksack River and further up the highway toward Artist Point.
There is no traffic to speak of and cell service is spotty in spots, which is part of the appeal for a lot of guests. Pack for the mountain: layers, real boots in winter, and a little patience with the pace.
Getting here
Glacier is about 35 minutes east of Bellingham on SR 542 and just over 90 minutes from Seattle including the drive up from I-5. The road is paved and maintained the whole way; only the stretch above Glacier toward the ski area sees winter closures in serious weather, so check WSDOT’s mountain pass report if you are heading further up in winter.

“We stay with VRBO or similar very frequently. We have never stayed in a place with more attention to detail. From the thoughtful basket of s’mores for the camp fire to a toothbrush in the draw from my kid who forgot to pack one- it was all there. There were even an assortment of flip flops with wear out to the hot tub. The decorations were perfect. Wonderful walking trails right into the community with no need to drive. And they were so thoughtful for dogs as well- perfect dog bowls, dog bed, fenced yard. The manager was extremely responsive and promised a 5 star experience and totally delivered. I would highly recommend this cabin.”
